You’ve loved them. You’ve sheltered them. You’ve nursed them, cried over them and rejoiced in their success. Now they’re leaving home. What are you going to do? …Sit around feeling sorry for yourself? Start up a new hobby/career? Go back to that beloved and satisfying career? Finally go to college yourself and see what all the fun is about? Start living through your child’s life? Become a “helicopter” parent?
Has your youngest child just left home? Are you sitting in their room looking longingly at the spot on the desk where they used to do their homework? Worse still, are you lying on their bed, inhaling the lingering scent of your long lost child? And is all this making you feel like a complete lost cause? Are you afraid to tell anyone because you think you are so pathetic? Are you wondering where the young, independent, carefree person you once were has gone? Wonder no longer. Get up and find that person you still are.
Maybe you’re the one leaving home for the first time? College is over. The great big world of adventure is calling you. You’re looking forward all the time. Or are you? Is the safe and cosy world of childhood still warm and shining in your memory? Is the world in fact a “big, bad†world? Do you sometimes want to run and hide in your room with your teddy bear and hope you don’t have to be “a responsible adultâ€? You’re not the only one.
Does it sometimes seem to you that the world is going so fast that you could just fall off it at any moment? Do Mondays come round faster and faster? Can you no longer remember the reasons why you are doing what you are doing? Do you feel that you’d like to stop the world just long enough to gather your thoughts?
